Christmas Banner – Sheet Music Garland

I think I am officially in the Christmas spirit!

I know, I know – for some of you it’s TOO early… but I just love this time of year! I’m the type of person who doesn’t want Christmas day to come, because it means it is all over until next year. (Speaking of, this year FLEW by!)

I’m still visiting family & friends while my sisters and I work away at our Christmas wreath business we do together every year. It’s been a lot of fun so far, and my mom and I have been busy working away creating homemade Christmas decorations for our homes (See how I made a Christmas tree out of clothespins). For this post, you’ll be seeing the version of the garland we made for her mantel – as well as her Christmas mantel I helped decorate for her!

A couple of days ago I visited Deal N Deal Liquidators where I picked up some treasures to get creative with at home. One of those items included antique sheet music! I was pretty excited about this as I’ve been keeping an eye out for sheet music for a long time now!

It’s safe to say you can expect a lot of sheet music on my blog (and in my home) in the near future ;)

My first project is this sheet music garland I’m very excited about! Flipping through Better Homes & Gardens Christmas Ideas magazine I came across some big letter printouts that were framed on someone’s wall, and it seemed like the perfect idea for my new (very old) sheet music.

For this project you will need:

Sheet music – old or new, or even printed out online!
Printer
Glue
Glitter
Twine, string, or ribbon of choice
scissors

Steps:

1) Figure out what you want your garland to say. If you are looking for seasonal garland, try looking up ‘Christmas Words’ or ‘Christmas Greetings’ .. You can even get inspiration from your favourite Christmas songs!

2) Tear out as many pages as you will need for your letters, and then a couple of more in case you have a few printing mishaps (I know I sure did!)

3) I used Pic Monkey (www.picmonkey.com) to create all of the letter images for my photos. I used a 5×7 canvas on a transparent background, and selected the text I wanted to create individual letters to save on my desktop. As for size – this is up to you depending on how large of paper of your sheet music is on, as well as the type of text you prefer. ;)

4) After my images were saved on my desktop (or should I say my sister’s). I copied the image from the desktop, and opened a text document (for example, Microsoft Word) where I pasted the image. It should center itself in the middle of the page, however you can edit and do a print preview to ensure it is in the center of the page and to your desired size.

5) When you are ready to print your image, lightly tape your sheet music to a regular piece of printing paper to help prevent your printer from getting jammed. Yikes! I would also recommend putting in one piece at a time for printing to help prevent this also!

I also want to add a few ‘happy accident’ moments here. Halfway through I started to get low on ink which created a few streaky parts to the text. After changing the ink cartridge, I decided I wanted to keep a few of these to give the effect of ‘stamps’. This was further enhanced by the new ink cartridges lighter version of black. Although I’m not saying go run out of ink - I am saying creating half your images a slightly-lighter version of black (a dark grey) creates a more authentic ‘faux stamp’ finish. Just a thought!

6) I laid out all of my papers on the floor to make sure everything looked okay, and then I drew two pointed ends on the bottom of the sheets to cut out to create the shapes seen above! By the way, these banners are for my own home! You’ll see what I have planned for my own banners in the next couple of weeks! :)

7) This step is optional to you, but for an extra bit of ‘glam’ I lightly glued the bottom edge of the sheets with decoupage glue and sprinkled with gold glitter on the bottom. I then set the sheets aside to dry.

8) Adhere your letters to your ribbon. There are so many ways you could do this depending on the look you want to achieve! We simply taped the back of the paper to twine and added some hot glue for extra security.

That’s it! You’re finished! :) I love the way my mom’s Christmas mantel turned out with her garland, and she does too!

I can’t wait to get home and put up my own garlands to share with you all.
