Create a Personalized Bedding Set

Happy Sunday everyone!
Create Your Own Bedding Set Pinterest

I hope your weekend is going exactly as you want it to, and that you are feeling very relaxed and rejuvenated!

For me, the weekend and following week means plenty of work on the house. Which has included a shopping trip yesterday to pick up things we needed for the house…

During our trip, I took a quick stroll into Homesense (Of course) only to fall in love with a beautiful Ralph Lauren patterned bedding set.

Creating a Personalized Bedding Set

It came with two pillow shams, a bed skirt, and comforter. Usually, I’m a duvet cover girl… but since they didn’t have a duvet cover I scooped up the set anyway. I typically like duvet cover sets because I find they are usually quite a bit cheaper than purchasing a comforter set.

Creating a Personalized Bedding Set

When I arrived home I excitedly stripped my bed and decided how I wanted the bedding to look. I have accumulated a few throw pillows and a couple of other duvet covers, which made me realize:

I always personalize my bedding.

Creating a Personalized Bedding Set

I have never, ever purchased an entire set with all of the extra bells and whistles – I always “create my own” set. So, I thought it might be fun to show you how you can gradually accumulate bedding to suit your personal style, changing seasons, or whatever your take on decorating may be – to create a personalized bedding set.

Disclaimer: Please note I am not a professional bed maker, and I refuse to iron my bedding – try to think of the wrinkles as added personality. ;) Hahaha!
Also, The exposed beam you will see has not been covered up as of yet, but we do plan to finish it up soon. Bare with me!

Start with a neutral set:

Whether you choose a comforter, duvet cover, or quilt – a good place to start is a simple, neutral set with the basics. Black, grey, white, brown… whatever your favourite base colour is – a great starting point is to go with something simplistic and solid. Our first set was a $60 white duvet cover set that just came with two pillow shams and the duvet cover itself. It was quite similar to this one from Pottery Barn. (but not staged quite as beautifully!)

Get a few extras:

I personally don’t think bedding looks quite as full and finished without at least two euro pillows and shams – I purchased some inexpensive inserts and had two shams sewed for me. These were plain white, so also wouldn’t break the bank to purchase some. I had all-white bedding for a while, because I figured I could add pops of colour down the road – that and I just like white!

Don’t turn your nose up at the thrift store:

Some of my FAVOURITE pillow covers have come from a thrift store. I know some people feel a bit uncomfortable with second-hand linens, but I make a point to only purchase decorative pillow covers (and of course wash them first).

This gorgeous euro pillow I scored for about $2 and I absolutely love it!

My bedskirt was also a secondhand piece, which I don’t think I’ll be switching out anytime soon.

Accumulate:

In the winter I switched out my white duvet cover for the ruffled one you saw in my Christmas Home Tour- the added darker tone was very cozy for the winter, as well as it was a heavier cover and therefore much warmer. I still stuck with a neutral at this point, but as you can see I used both of my thrifted finds to add a little interest to the bed.
I also scored that throw pillow cover for a dollar. :)

Whenever I fall in love with an inexpensive pillow I go ahead and buy it. This pillow was on sale for $10 at Homesense last fall, and since it’s made it’s rounds throughout the house. You don’t need to limit a throw pillow to just one room – experiment as the seasons change and when it feels right!

Reuse:

The current bedding I just purchased came with a bed-skirt… but since I love my current bedskirt, I decided to save that for a guest bedroom. Pieces of what bedding you aren’t currently using in your own bedroom can be used in another bedroom. No sense in storing away what can be used and enjoyed!

Creating a Personalized Bedding Set

For our new bedding, I used my three euro pillows with the two homemade covers, and the one thrifted cover. I mixed these pillows with my white shams from our first bedding set, and the two shams that came with the Ralph Lauren set. I then threw the comforter over our existing duvet for extra ‘pouf’ and added warmth.

The finishing touch? My clearance nautical-themed pillow from Homesense, and a knitted throw I borrowed from the living-room.

The over-all tip? Buy what you love, and always keep your eyes open. If you are drawn to a pillow, sheets, comforter, or throw – buy it! Whether you add it to your bedding or use it elsewhere, I truly believe if you really love a fabric you will continue to use and re-use it throughout your home.

I hope some of these tips help you feel confident in creating a bedding set that fits your style, and your budget. :)

Cheers!

    • Thank you so much Virginia! The beam is from a wall we had removed to create a larger master bedroom, up close you can see it needs some aesthetic work ;)

  16. What gorgeous bedding. I would love for you to share at the weekly Bacon Time linky, if you have not already. Have a great week.

  17. I hopped over from one of the parties, gosh, I have spent a few hours browsing around today so sorry not sure which one it was. However, I just want to say how beautiful your bed looks with the soft blues. I also just bought some Ralph Lauren fabric which is blue and a soft white and have had it made up into cushions (pillows as called in the USA :) for my sofa. It is actually a very similar pattern looking closely at yours.

I think the overall look has given a lift to your room, it looks fresh and inviting. I bet your thrilled.
